PHYLOGEOGRAPHIC AND GENETIC STUDIES OF WILD CATS: HABITAT MAPPING AND UNDERSTANDING POPULATION PATTERNS
This project focuses on phylogeographic and genetic studies, habitat mapping, and improving our understanding of population patterns of these fascinating animals.
Wild cats are important for ecosystems as they play a key role in maintaining balance in the food chain, controlling populations of small mammals, and supporting biodiversity. Studying their populations allows us to identify genetic diversity, connectivity between subpopulations, and potential threats such as habitat fragmentation, hybridization with domestic cats, and human pressures.
Within the project, we are collecting samples and using modern genetic methods to analyze population structure, identify key habitats, and assess the genetic status of the species. This information will serve as a foundation for conservation planning and management at both local and regional levels.
The project is carried out with the support of the Ministry of Scientific and Technological Development and Higher Education of the Republic of Srpska, and its results will contribute to the long-term preservation of wild cats and the stability of their habitats in our country.
